Espritpatch

  Another week, another finish. I am sure I won't sustain that rhythm for very long but let's make the most of it while it last! I picked up my mini Storm at Sea top that had been ready for quilting since last January and had re-joined the UFO pile. I had originally started the piecing in 2010 , not sure why it took me so long to finally get back to it really! I found a very nice fabric in my stash, one that had been there for over 15 years for sure.  The quilting is a very straight forward stitch in the ditch, with my favorite King Tut's thread. As for the binding, another fabric from my stash, a batik this time, to keep with the top, that I finished hand sewing yesterday. One less UFO in my pile and one more crossed off my PhD list . And I can happily report that I spent at least 4x15 minutes in the sewing room this week working on this UFO. I haven-t had much time to sew this week between a crazy amount of work but also another birthday and some cakes but I had a deadline to keep my focus. I tested Hippity Hoppity that has been designed by Nadra I don't have an Easter quilt so this was a good one to try! I am always amazed and tempted by the variety of swaps available on IG and Flicker, and I sign up for (far too) many! The last one I had to finish was the Zodiac swap that was due this month too. And I have been on swap-diet recently because I end up only having time to sew for swaps or bees. Anyway, I posted my Zodiac mini last week but never had time to post about it until now. My partner for the swap was Cancer so while on holidays, I made about 30 mini hexies (3/4' in size) to draw the Cancer sign. Now some saw other things apparently.... I found a lovely night blue background for the mini that I quilted with a constellation And applique the hexies on top. For the back, I added some music I hope my partner likes it! There was lots on my list this month. First the children were breaking up for school on 17 July so I made some teachers' gifts. And even if every year I promise myself I will be organised and won't finish them just the night before....well it always end up being a mad rush the night before. So I made 3 open wide pouch from Noodle Head pattern and tutorial that the kiddies gifted to their teachers: This was my choice for A lovely Year of finishes I also made a pencil case to Big Boy who needed one for his roll-over day to Middle School. I used a pattern by Ayumills in her Patchwork Please book and lovely Diary of a Wimpy Kid fabric. He loved it! And then there were the swaps. Yes plural because I am a swap addict :-) and ended signing up for (too) many. The first to go out was the round 2 of It's so Kawaii swap. This week, I finished my last swap for the year! I finished my table runner for the #jollyswap on Instagram. My partner had asked for a table runner that I had finished piecing last month but stomach bugs had invaded my house! So the quilting got postponed for a week. I used a simple stippling for the negative space. And I used the dark star fabric for the binding. I really like this design I used the extra HST blocks I had to make some coasters and also made a little pin-cushion for my partner. There was just the binding left to add on my mini. And today I finished sewing it by hand so my mini is officially finished. I really like the way the binding line with the backing in some places. I seem to need a deadline to be able to work and get focused so with the mailing deadline for the Modern She Made Swap looming, I knew where to concentrate my efforts over the last week or so! The theme for the swap was hexagons, so of course I couldn't pass this round! My partner's mosaic was quite varied and I settled on a mini quilt for her. And to fit the theme I picked a quilt with hexagons which would finish in an hexagon (similar to my long-standing UFO September in the hexagon ). I went smaller in size though to have a mini quilt rather than a full size quilt. I had such a blast making my triangle quilt that I wanted to play with triangles again!). I thought I would use a rainbow of colours and use 2 fabrics per colour of very different value (one light, one dark). So I went through my stash to pick pairs of fabric for the blocks. I used 1.5' strips that I sew together and then cut into 2.5' tall equilateral triangles. I made the outer round with concentric hex...

I am a queen of last-minute, nothing new here, but I have been particularly last-minute for the Sewing Room Swap. I am not sure how it happened, but it did happened. Anyway, before the week-end started, I hardly had anything done (I knew what I was making - pattern, fabric etc) but my progress was ridiculous. I picked a mini from my partner's mosaic as inspiration and decided to make a similar one. The mini is made of 4 Arkansas Stars from Lee's tutorial here in the Summer Sampler series. I didn't cut out the diamonds for my blocks but used strips that I sew together before cutting the diamonds out. I used 2 5/8' strips but next time I would use 2 3/4' or even 3' strips as some were slightly on the shorter side. So by Thursday evening all I had done was my diamonds, I paper pieced half of the blocks on Friday night and the second half on Saturday.
