Advent wall hanging

Last month, I have tested one of Jen's beautiful pattern so there was some secret sewing going on. I like the Advent time and the custom at mass of lighting one additional candle every Sunday so this wall hanging will be a perfect way for me to light a candle at home, in the safest way as possible.

The pattern that Jen has designed is beautiful and covers a range of technique. There is some paper piecing for the candle flame, "normal" piecing for the candles and blocks and also some applique for the leaves and words. A perfect pattern to brush off your skill on a manageable size project. And if you hop over to her blog, you can win a copy of the pattern until tomorrow.

Now I have been naughty as I didn't follow the layout that Jen had given us but I wanted to make it fit my wall space. Especially at Christmas when we have lots of wall hanging and extra decorations. And a table runner in our house is a risky addition (especially with a light background) plus I already have one that I made a few years back!

So the first step is the paper piecing of the flame, all 10 of them, which gives you lovely diamonds.
Next step is to piece the 4 block and applique the words and leaves (I used fusible!)

and then to assemble the top. I didn't follow the pattern at this point because I wanted a vertical banner and also I used different sashing because I didn't want to have to piece it.

and this is it, ready for quilting and binding. Next on the frame I hope!

  1. What a great wall hanging. I wonder if mum would like one for the chapel for Christmas. I'll have to ask her

  2. I just posted on Sew Cute Tuesday and was so happy to see your lovely advent candle wall hanging. It was our family tradition for years and I still have the candles. I like the way you arranged the blocks. It can fit on any wall. My son passed away in April, so it is going to be a tough season. He was only 47. Thank you for reminding me of Jesus, the Light of the World.
