Blogger's Quilt Festival

It is that time again when the lovely Amy from Amy's creative side is hosting her Fall Blogger's Quilt Festival.

It is always packed with gorgeous quilts and wonderful story. And although I am not making award winning quilts, I like participating and showing the world my own creations! It is a great way to reach out to people you would have never met otherwise and to discover some wonderful blogs that you didn't where at the reach of your computer!

This fall, I have decided to enter a "mini-quilt" (12' square) I made this summer for the Brit Quilt Swap. If your read my blog regularly, you will have seen this mini before! When I received my partner details, she asked for some appliqué. At first, that made me wonder what to do as I had ideas for some pieced blocks until I thought it was great time I started using my Sizzix Big Shot that I had bought a while ago and the Tim Holz sewing room die.
I hardly ever make a draft quilt out of paper but this time I did try cutting my shapes out of paper before I took the plunge with fabrics. This was my initial idea:

When I started to pull out my stash, my idea merge to a sewing studio with stacks of fabric on either side of the mannequin. I had some Makower fabric rolls which worked great for that. And I found a nice neutral "wall paper" for the middle of the room and some "wooden flooring". I pieced some selvage strips for the bodice of my mannequin and put some spools on a shelf. I then dropped a few buttons on the floor. The appliqué was blanket stitched on my machine.
For the wall paper, I machine quilted with a "knitting stitch" and then "tiled" the floor and to finish off my quilt, I added a tape measure on the floor.
This was a great experience and I was really pleased about the final piece. "Pictorial" quilts are not something I normally do, even more so without a pattern to follow. And my partner was kind enough to say she liked her new "Sewing Room"!
